Painting a clear picture of each consulting gig is the groundwork for correctly positioning yourself to bring the most business value to a project. Failing to do so can lead to projects that go horribly wrong. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been hired as a UX consultant, chances are that at least one of these scenarios must be true:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The client has a smaller budget, smaller scope, or a limited amount of time to devote to this particular project\u2014otherwise they would have hired a pricier digital agency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The client has a digital team in place and just needs a boost or a fresh perspective on the UX front\u2014hence, they hired a single individual.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we learn to swallow our pride and look at the situation objectively, we open the door to some incredible, invaluable lessons for next time. Here are the top 5 reasons freelance UX projects fail (along with preventative tactics).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reason 1: You are not aware of the true need of the client.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of each project, ask yourself: What\u2019s the situation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is never just \u201cThe client needs a new UX design;\u201d it\u2019s something bigger. Think, what does the business need? A partner? A fresh perspective? A quick turnaround? A bold reinvention?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the strategy behind a business\u2019s UX initiative reveals a lot of information that can help you deliver what the client truly desires.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>To avoid this UX freelance fail:<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the client to describe the strategic reasoning behind this UX initiative\u2014and ask upfront. Inquire about previous UX experiences the client has had, especially anything negative. Do this at the very beginning of the engagement, because that\u2019s when executive-level stakeholders are present (they sometimes drop off when the project gets underway or don\u2019t attend subsequent meetings).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reason 2: You view yourself as a \u201cfreelancer\u201d and may have a skewed perception of what that really means.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, you are a freelancer, an outsider joining an established team on the client side, but this doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re doomed to be isolated and excluded from the team. Go out of your way to integrate yourself into the team as much as you can, which means concentrating on <\/span><i>visibility<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i>collaboration<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i>facilitation<\/i><b><i>.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>To avoid this UX freelance fail:<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">1. Maintain visibility.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Be there in person, especially at the beginning of the project; the client\u2019s team needs to be familiar with you and put a face to your name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">2. Collaborate in real time.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If in-person meetings aren\u2019t a possibility, there are plenty of other options. Use the phone (remember those?), online chat, or virtual meetings. Block off enough time to discuss the project in detail and get to know the client\u2019s team. You can also invest in collaborative platforms like <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"https:\/\/mural.ly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mural.ly<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (whiteboarding\/sketching) and <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UXPin<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (wireframing\/prototyping) to facilitate remote sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">3. Facilitate communication.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use project management tools such as <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"https:\/\/basecamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Basecamp<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"https:\/\/asana.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asana<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trello<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to keep the discussion going at all times and encourage openness, transparency and visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reason 3: Communication is everything.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing client expectations and scope is a big part of what freelance UX designers do, even when the client has their own project manager or product manager. Set expectations:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Communicate about everything, even if it seems obvious; do whatever you can to avoid misunderstandings. Explain things like the difference between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/studio\/ebooks\/guide-to-wireframing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wireframes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/studio\/ebooks\/guide-to-mockups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mockups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or between site maps and use case maps. You are the UX expert \u2013 everyone else might not be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Make informed recommendations:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the subject matter expert on UX, so act like one! Don\u2019t rely on a project manager to craft your emails; take initiative and communicate your opinions openly (and respectfully) to the client.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Give a backstage pass:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Give the client a glimpse into the thinking behind the designs. If you\u2019re a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UXPin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> user, share your project folder with the client from the start and upload relevant documents (product requirements, user research, etc) each step of the way. This way, you show how ideas evolve over time. I love sleek wireframes and personas, don\u2019t get me wrong, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documentation for the sake of documentation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the enemy of every UX process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deliverables should help drive decisions, not just document them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One size does not fit all in today\u2019s complicated digital landscape where development, design, strategy, social platforms, marketing, and psychology intertwine. Each of those is a unique process, and not keeping that in mind may result in lots of pretty visuals with no actual use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/studio\/blog\/designing-for-culture-creating-the-perfect-ux-persona\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? When to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/studio\/blog\/creating-perfect-user-flows-for-smooth-ux\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">user flows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? When to use wireframes vs. prototypes? How complex of a prototype do you really need to build?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>To avoid this UX freelance fail:<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determine early on which UX deliverables are appropriate for the project and communicate your determination to the stakeholders. Explain how each piece of documentation serves a specific purpose and supports an efficient UX process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be specific. For example, you might say: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn stage 1 we will create detailed use case maps. The maps will focus on specific workflows within the application. There may be up to 15 separate maps. In stage 2 we will create a handful of wireframes. Once the general direction is agreed upon, we will proceed with lo-fi prototypes. Rather than creating wireframes for each use case, as that would be time consuming and not as collaborative, you will be able to interact with an actual prototype to gather your feedback.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reason 5: You don\u2019t want to be uncomfortable.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being out of your comfort zone can play a big role in how you bring true value to freelance UX projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are simply interested in staying safe and doing something you\u2019ve done before, you might lose an opportunity to innovate (and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become known <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as an innovator). Clients tend to value innovation more highly than the technical skills you demonstrate throughout the process. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>To avoid this UX freelance fail:<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>1. Try something new, on every project.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if it is a small thing \u2013 such as a new approach to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/studio\/blog\/the-practical-guide-to-empathy-maps-creating-a-10-minute-persona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empathy mapping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or a different tool for creating wireframes, you will force yourself to see things from a different angle and perhaps discover a better way to accomplish a common task. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or maybe you\u2019ll simply learn that the old way is still better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing small things differently gives you the peace of mind that expectations will be met but you\u2019ll still learn something in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. If you want to go bigger \u2013 innovate.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opposite of staying comfortable is often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxpin.com\/studio\/blog\/product-innovation-derailed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do you innovate when a client is expecting certain deliverables? Innovation comes in many useful forms beyond \u201cblue sky thinking\u201d: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During your project kickoff, you might add a 20-minute assumptions unpacking exercise at the end to create a baseline of knowledge that you can test against.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of only interfacing with the direct client team (e.g. product manager, marketer, etc.), you can suggest they introduce you to their customer support team. Review incoming tickets and listen in on calls to reveal any patterns in usability issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever your angle on innovation might be \u2013 explain how the tactics will improve the bottom line. Now that we know that failure is a huge part of becoming better, we must closely examine the opportunities afforded to us with every misstep. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next time you take on a UX project, remember the 5 points described here.
