Great microcopy converts users by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Motivating them to take an action<\/li><li>Contextualizing their experiences<\/li><li>Anticipating and addressing their issues&nbsp;<\/li><li>Creating a delightful brand narrative&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Microcopy is copy that is found in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Form fields and labels&nbsp;<\/li><li>Error messages&nbsp;<\/li><li>Confirmation messages&nbsp;<\/li><li>Button copy&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Effective is Good Microcopy?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From microcopy\u2019s definition (small bits of short copy), one might think that it has a small impact. Nothing could be further from the truth, good microcopy has a positive effect on conversions and positive user behavior.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a case study by Yoast, an SEO optimization site, there was an <a href=\"https:\/\/cxl.com\/blog\/microcopy\/\">11.30% increase<\/a> in conversions after revising microcopy. They added \u201cthere will be no additional costs\u201d and a \u2018continue shopping\u2019 text link to the checkout form. They also did away with the \u2018remove\u2019 microcopy and replaced it with an \u2018x.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/5KUyPtyyDnDOFF2r5X4agpGcps--3DetRmaO1zYOIqlKMp0GBDlo0_Vj82louPRH-FKHl1N3zO5THK35hkEgHnyRO_zvhVg4IveAv0HDyzvWziI2Whoe9q5TOtq-IdrVdNaaTGeeNRaV85rP\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoast\u2019s microcopy changes (<a href=\"https:\/\/cxl.com\/blog\/microcopy\/\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another case study, a Danish e-commerce site increased its conversions by <a href=\"https:\/\/cxl.com\/blog\/microcopy\/\">17.18%<\/a> by simply adding the words \u201cview bundle\u201d above its CTA button.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to Leverage Microcopy on Your Site or App&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CTAs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Calls to Action (CTAs) ask users to take a very specific task such as signing up, buying a product, or starting a free trial. The microcopy in the CTA button and around it is very useful in getting users to take the desired action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the CTA, the microcopy should be short, action-oriented, and descriptive. Around the CTA button, microcopy should anticipate and reduce any friction or barriers that the buyer might have towards taking action. Microcopy should be tailored according to context and customer data. Here are some tips to reduce friction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reduce fears the users might have<\/strong>: Users fear being spammed, losing their data, hidden charges, and their information being misused or sold. You alleviate these fears by using microcopy such as \u2018no spam,\u2019 \u2018your data will not be sold,\u2019 \u2018free forever\u2019, or explaining why you need their information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Facebook alleviates its users\u2019 fears by assuring them that the service is \u201cfree and will always be\u201d and by explaining why they need to know the user\u2019s birthday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/Mn0e_GOFL7yuuYSli0gV6n2sT1qhIM1-XTMBWRTIMzJC3ZpRfVoBbcuDGPeIdBePhoPe0RLn_qAI29dqoJnzWCd3TLZFeMzSXyFU30-9a4lYj7GjNhnVueBq5fChl9Gt_AGrNDo_1eVaESRR\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook\u2019s signup microcopy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\">Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Have useful error states<\/strong>: Errors are a significant barrier to conversion and many new users just give up. They will determine what you will write and how you will write it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For clarity, your brand voice is the unique way in which your company communicates. It might be cheeky, fun, or abrasive.
